ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS: Bio - Catalysts aims to nurture our nature for the better future
Sabado, Marso 24, 2012
Introduction
Trash on
our beaches and in our waterways isn’t just unsightly – it’s also potentially
dangerous to marine life and in some cases harmful to water quality. Trash doesn’t fall from the sky, it falls
from human hands. And human hands have the power to stop it.
As
the Philippine Constitution, enacted the Republic Act 911 or the Garbage
Disposal Policy together with the reinforced power of some agencies such as
DENR - CENRO, BFAR, DA, and DOH, such rules and regulations were then imposed
for a strong and effective policy. Prior to this, various situations are then
bombarded in our environment due to the immoral and unethical activities of the
people, such as improper garbage disposal. On the other hand, we, the Bio –
Catalysts are just concerned of what our environment is experiencing, thus, we
were then able to conduct a small yet a very successful coastal clean-up last
17th day of March, 2012 at Barangay Bula, General Santos City.
This
blog is made to show that we, first year Bachelor of Secondary Education major in
Biology can help to preserve and protect our nature and to make a history. We
are aiming for a better world where anyone can live safely and everyone can
enjoy the sea. So, for us to do this, we should change, for change stars with ourselves
not from others.

Overview of the Topic
Coastal Clean-up is an act that is a
big help for our environment nowadays. Many associations and groups are
conducting this said activity all over the world. The biggest coastal clean-up
that happens every year is the International Coastal Clean-up Day.
The said activity are done by us
because we observed that our sea shores are really dirty especially on those
places that can be consider as a squatters area. This blog is made to show that we, first year Bachelor
of Secondary Education major in Biology can help to preserve and protect our
nature and to make a history. We are aiming for a better world where anyone can
live safely and everyone can enjoy the sea.
This Coastal
Clean-up Project serves not just simply a project but also a practiced for us,
students, to be aware of the environment's condition and to set up an action in
order to alleviate some environmental problems.
Objective
This
coastal clean-up isn't just about cleaning the sea shore, it is also pollution
prevention. People must be made aware that there will be no trashes to pick if
people in the first place will not throw wastes especially the
non-biodegradable ones anywhere much less on the sea shore where the waves will
wash the wastes to the sea. This coastal clean-up will is not only made
to clean the sea shore but it is also made to show that we should volunteer in
helping our environment. More so, it will show that volunteer-ism activity when
properly managed could play a vital role in addressing environmental issues,
pollution prevention and human development in general.
Significance of the Activity
The significance of this project is to save our nature especially the sea, because it is one of the sources in getting food and livelihood. Through this project, it will edify them that we should value and at least maintain cleanliness, not just for the sake of environment but also, to the people who will benefited from it.

Conclusion/Generalization
Keeping the environment clean and green does not only contributes to the
wellness of the environment itself but also it affects the people that were
involved in it. We, as the inhabitants of this world should learn how to
appreciate the benefits that we get from it and above all, we should stop
abusing and exploiting our natural resources and let's keep in mind that it is
our reservoir of raw materials that we need in our daily living.
This Coastal Clean-up
Project serves not just simply a project but also a practiced for us, students,
to be aware of the environment's condition and to set up an action in order to
alleviate some environmental problems. The said project was a success with the
participation of the officials in the barangay and also some of the people who
helped in lending us some materials that we needed and the efforts of the
students and most especially to the opportunity that was given by our Ed Sci
126 adviser, Dr. Ava Clare Marie O. Robles.
Trivia's & Games :))
Trivia:
1. In America, an average child will use between 8 -10,000 disposable diapers ($2,000 worth) before being potty trained. Each year parents and babysitters dispose of about 18 billion of these items. In the United States alone these single-use items consume nearly 100,000 tons of plastic and 800,000 tons of tree pulp. We will pay an average of $350 million annually to deal with their disposal. Plastic does not biodegrade; these diapers will still be in the landfill 300 years from now.
2. We throw away more than 60 million plastic bottles a day.
3.A cigarette butt that entered the ocean in 1986, starts to decompose in 1991 which is five years after.
4. A Styrofoam cup that enters the ocean decomposes only after eighteen years while it takes fifty years for a tin can to decompose.
5. If one thinks it is shocking to know that it takes 450 years for a plastic bottle that enters the sea to decompose, wait till he is informed that it takes one million years for a glass bottle that enters the ocean to decompose.

We should start cleaning with OURSELVES...
A green planet, means a brighter Future.
May it be everyone's motto.
For a better future.
It is the sea and the shore @ Bula.
A post that you can see when you enter Barangay Bula's barangay hall.
We can see the garbage that are thrown away by the citizens.
A boat parked near the sea shore.
Student Reflection
Venus Jane Ugmares
"The earth we abuse and the living things we kill will, in the end, take their revenge; for in exploiting their presence we are diminishing our future."
I was very grateful that I had given an opportunity to
extend our service that is related in helping the environment.
Upon seeing the place, at first, I feel disgusted because of the irritating smell, there were dispersed trashes and the heat also add up to the our burden, but it all turned on to be good when we start cleaning the area.
I feel happy and fulfilled with what we have done in order to at least relieve the condition of the sea coast.
Rodel Alo
"The environment, after all, is where we all meet, where we all where we all have a mutual interest. It is one thing that all of us share. It is not only a mirror of ourselves, but a focusing lens on what we can become."
It was a great privilege to be a part of Bio-Catalysts group
that we all spent even an inch of our lives just to have a coastal clean-up. We
are so glad that we did it successfully with all our interest and dedications
to visit such places which are less of care.
In totality, we might not have a long time cleaning the area
but at least in our dispositions, we create history.
Precious Joy Canuto
"The activist is not the man who says the sea is dirty. The activist is the man who cleans up the sea."
Seeing that garbage in the sea shore, it made me think. “How
long will the Earth live?”
Being a part of Bio-Catalysts group is a great opportunity for
in simple way, I helped the environment. Cleaning that area in Barangay Bula is
a great help for the community. I just
realize there that the garbage in the area will not be there if citizens only
have discipline and proper education about waste management program. So, this thought stacked on my mind: “Change
always star with ourselves.” So, let us change for the better life.
Hannah Jane Belmonte
"Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect."
The project that we conducted serves as an eye opener to me because aside from the beautiful and maintained beaches and resorts, there were some coastal areas that are left abandonly, that are not taken care of that has lead to its dreadful state.
